A bit of history. Muselets (also known as wirehoods, or bobble holders), intricate constructions of wire cages and metal capsules designed to secure the corks on carbonated beverages and sustain the pressure within bottles, were invented in 1844 by Adolphe Jacquesson, a member of the Jacquesson dynasty that founded what is now widely believed to be the oldest independent champagne manufacturing company, Jacquesson et Fils, back in the late 1700s. The invention proved to be a game-changer, significantly improving health and safety within the champagne industry while also reducing waste levels. Waiters, sommeliers and wine aficionados no longer risked having the cork pop out of the bottle and go straight into their eye or forehead; and manufacturers no longer needed to worry about bottles exploding due to the natural pressure of the gas stored within.
These days, however, muselets are much more than security tools. They are, to the wine world, what accessories are to the fashion circuit: status symbols, identity markers, and collectables for those in the know. The word “placomusophilie” emerged in recent years to signify collecting muselets: an illustration of the cult status these objects have achieved. Muselets are also powerful marketing tools, there to communicate brand identity and create a new kind of conversation with the customer.
